About Karlovy Vary Spring Salt

Karlovy Vary spring salt has been produced in the Czech Republic, in the famous spa town of Karlovy Vary, for more than 140 years, in the production plant of Karlovarská sůl s.r.o.

The idea for the production of medicinal salt originated with the Karlovy Vary physician Gottfried Berger, who first proposed the use of salt obtained by evaporation from mineral water in 1708.

Today, Karlovarská sůl s.r.o. combines historical traditions with the latest technologies. Between 2024 and 2025, the production plant underwent extensive modernisation, thanks to which:

  • It has been certified BIO and ORGANIC, which confirm the natural origin and ecological purity of the product.

  • It has successfully passed voluntary certification at the State Health Institute (SZÚ) as proof of the safety, purity and effectiveness of Karlovy Vary salt.

It is produced from thermal water pumped from a depth of over 1,500 metres, which undergoes a thorough filtration process and is enriched with carbon dioxide. Traditional production dates back to 1882, has been modernised and guarantees proven quality and efficiency.

The first attempts to extract spring salt from the Karlovy Vary springs.

At the beginning of the 17th century, local residents and businessmen noticed the high mineral content of the famous Karlovy Vary thermal springs. This was the beginning of the industrial extraction of medicinal salt, which later made the entire region famous far beyond the borders of Bohemia.

1739-1769

Period of prohibition

A 30-year ban on salt production due to fears of a decline in visitors to the baths.

Local authorities and spa operators feared that industrial salt extraction would damage the natural springs and weaken their healing effects. The ban was introduced to protect Karlovy Vary's reputation as a leading European spa town.

1882

Technological revolution

Modernisation of production technology under the leadership of Ernst Ludwig.

Ernst Ludwig, a well-known German engineer and entrepreneur, introduced advanced methods of evaporation and salt crystallization. His innovations significantly increased the purity of the product and the production volume, while preserving the unique healing properties of Karlovy Vary salt.
